When surfacing, you pull the loose end of the belt (effectively unbuckling by releasing the pin from the belt hole), then extend your arm toward the surface while maintaining tension on the belt. Should you lose consciousness, your hand will fall away and the belt will also "automatically" fall away.

Silicone feels better because its softer and has a bit more stretch than rubber. Silicone weight belts also last twice as long as rubber weight belts.
